Common Failures and Causes for NTC Thermistor

NTC thermistor can be applied in many fields, such as temperature measurement and control, temperature compensation, surge current suppression, environmental measurement, etc. 
There are some common failures and causes for NTC thermistor
1. Short circuit: 
When theloop current is higher than Imax, or power rating is higher than Pmax for a long time, it will make the temperature of the thermistor higher than Tmax. At the start, the thermistor will have a rather low resistance, and then the thermistor will be burnt, resulting in short circuit or open circuit. 
2. Open circuit/Damage:
When an instant huge energy is loaded in the thermistor, the product may not bear it and then damage. Generally, it shows high impedance or direct open circuit.  
3. Offset resistance: NTC thermistor is the semiconductor component that is much sensitive to heat. If the IR reflow and rework exceeds certain temperature and time, the thermistor can easily be damaged, resulting in offset resistance. The resistance can increase or decrease.

Advantages of Peltier Controller

Peltier controller is a kind of electronic module, which is designed and produced by Analog Technologies Inc. (ATI). There is a variety of Peltier controllers in ATI, such as TECA1-XV-XV-D seriesATFC105D seriesATW3A314 series and so on. 
TECA1-XV-XV-D series Peltier controller has high efficiency, high stability, compact size and long service lifetime. ATFC105D series Peltier controller comes with a key pad and a digital display screen, which is used to drive TEC assemblies and monitor the working temperature at the same time.

ATW3A314 seriesPeltier controller is a product under development, which can stand by automatically when the object temperature is within a pre-set temperature window.It comes with Seebeck voltage available. This Peltier controller can switch frequency synchronizable to an external signal.

NTC Thermistor ATH10KL2B and ATH10KL2C

ATI provides a variety of basic NTC thermistor, such as ATH10KR8ATH10K1R0, or ATH10K1R25. These NTC thermistors come with high stability and accuracy, which can be used for optical components, industrial fields that high precision temperature measurement and control is needed.
Based on these basic thermistors, ATI has developed updated products. Take ATH10K1R25 as an example. ATH10K1R25 is a glass encapsulated NTC thermistor with bare leads or leads covered with high temperature plastic tubing. The resistance accuracy is 1%. It comes with a compact size: φ1.25mm×2.0mm. The temperature range is −40°C to 270°C.
As a core of new products, ATH10KL2B and ATH10KL2C have ATH10K1R25 inside them as the thermistor head, while outside the thermistor, there is a ring lug, which is used for easy fixing. There is a difference between ATH10KL2B and ATH10KL2C even if they have a same thermistor head. They come with different ring hole diameter: it is2.18 ± 0.1mm for ATH10KL2B, and 3.02 ± 0.1mm for ATH10KL2C. The latter is larger than the former, which can meet different requirements.

These NTC thermistors have different nominal values and B values, which can meet different requirements on various thermal control applications.
 

Practical Functions of NTC Thermistors

NTC thermistor in series in AC circuit functions like current insurance. 
How does this insurance do in the circuit? When the circuit is powered on, there produces an instant surge current. Thermistors can suppress this current. After this, the current will keep stable, and then the NTC thermistor will decrease its resistance to an ignorable value, which will not influence the current. 
During power-off at room temperature, the resistance of thermistors is relatively high, and at the moment of power-on, the resistance remains high, which is used to suppress the surge current. Then the temperature increases, and the resistance decreases to an ignorable value. If there is another surge current at this time, NTC thermistor cannot help and it needs a fuse. That is to say, NTC thermistor can only function at the moment of power-on. For the power supply that has a NTC thermistor inside, it cannot frequently power on and off. Restart only when the NTC thermistor cools down to its cold resistance. That means NTC cannot function when there is frequent power on and off.

Characteristics of Inductor Kits

The Inductor kit is a research and development product of ATI, which is utilized to store inductive elements. Inductor kits released by our company have high quality and long service lifetime. There are 128 individually lidded compartments, and inductor values are printed on each lid. In order to find inductors easily, the values are arranged in the order from left to right and from top to bottom. Each lid inside is very tight so that internal chip inductors can be ensured not to leak or lose. The following is the photo of an actual inductor kit.

Inductors are 100% lead (Pb)-free and RoHS compliant. According to the size, the inductors are divided into four series, 0402 series, 0603 series, 0805 series and 1008 series.The appearance size of an inductor kit is 11” (L) * 8.5” (W) (the letter paper size) *1.75” (H). Thus it is very convenient to carry and display.

Application Examples of NTC Thermistors (IV)

6. The function in power supply circuit of NTC thermistor 
NTC thermistors in series in the AC circuit plays a role of “current insurance”. NTC thermistors in parallel in the AC circuit plays a role of “limit overvoltage”. Frequent on/off is not allowed when using NTC thermistor in the power supply for startup surge suppression. Restarting is allowed when NTC thermistor cooled down to a cold resistance. Otherwise, NTC thermistor in the circuit will have little effect.
7. NTC thermistor in medical electronic thermometer
Nowadays, many large hospitals use electronic thermometer, which has a short measurement time, a high accuracy, and a memory function. It’s also easy to read. It performs well in clinical use. There are four components in the thermometer, heat detector, signal processing unit, display and power supply. Heat detector is a sensitive component, which generally applies one or more high accuracy fast response NTC thermistors. This is closely related to the accuracy and response speed of output temperature; signal processing unit has two algorithms, heating and calculating.

Application Examples of NTC Thermistors (III)

4. NTC thermistor “temporary” insert sensor
This type of thermistor sensor can insert into human body through an incision (the typical way is through a catheter). Compared with implantable sensor, this insert sensor has less danger. According to different surgeries, this sensor can effect for a few minutes to a few hours. Ideally, these sensors don’t need external force to drive, but if necessary, it can be driven by external forces.
5. NTC thermistor water temperature and water level sensor for solar heater
The thermistor sensor is a device that can sense the water temperature and water level, and then transform them into changing electronic signal. In the development history of solar heater, water temperature and water level sensor has played a vital role. The intelligentialization and humanization of the heater is inseparable to the water temperature and water level sensor, so is water temperature and water level measuring instrument. This sensor’s working status is a guarantee of the intelligent control of the whole heater.

2. NTC thermistor medical implantable sensor
Implantable sensor requires a compact size, light weight and body compatible. It should have a very small power. The most important, the thermistor cannot decay over time. Generally, this kind of thermistor sensor is very expensive and needs medical experts to do surgery for transplanting. 
3. External sensor for NTC thermistor and body fluid contact
There are some types of disposable sensor that are used extra corporally, but they contact the body liquid, such as disposable blood pressure sensor. This kind of sensor is used for surgical and intensive care, which can continually monitor the pressure of the patients. This is the most ideal method to measure blood pressure when the patients is under IV. This type of thermistor sensor needs to be replaced per 24 hours in order to ensure the cleanliness of the sensor. The sensor is connected to a monitor to record all the information. There are some other types of thermistor sensor contacting with body liquid.

Application Examples of NTC Thermistors (I)

NTC thermistor plays a vital role in many applications, due to its characteristics: the resistance decreases with the increase of the temperature and the resistance increases when the temperature falls. There are some application examples of NTC thermistor.
1. NTC thermistor in body temperature probe
The temperature accuracy of body temperature probe can reach 0.1°C. Therefore, the requirements on the thermistor is compact size, high accuracy, high reliability, good thermal cycle resistance capability. Clinical monitor applies double track body temperature measurement circuit, which is used for monitoring critically ill patients. It requires that one body temperature probe provides double track temperature measurement, which can match the double track temperature measurement circuit in the monitor. Traditionally, put two NTC thermistors in parallel to form a body temperature probe. Since this kind of probe has a large size, which cannot meet the requirements of miniaturization. On the one hand, two thermistors make the measurement result more accurate, for the reason that we can compare the results of two chips, and we can get a more accurate actual temperature. On the other hand, it has higher reliability. When accidentally one chip has sudden failure, the other chip can work well.

Applications of NTC Thermistor ATH10KL2A

ATH10KL2A is a kind of NTC thermistor, which is packaged with glass.The resistance value of NTC thermistor ATH10KL2Ais 10K at the temperature of 25°C. This NTC thermistor comes with an extra small ring lug for being fixed easily. As NTC thermistor ATH10KL2A has compact size, short respond time and some other good characteristics, it has been widely utilized to measure the temperature of laser diode, optical elements, etc.,with high accuracy and long term stability. Figure 1 is the physical photo of a NTC thermistor ATH10KL2A.

The NTC thermistor ATH10KL2A is made of three versions, ATH10KL2A, ATH10KL2AT63 and ATH10KL2AT63S. There are some differences among them. The first NTC thermistor comes with bear leads coated with copper, the leads of the second one is covered by using high temperature plastic tubing and the last one has two sealed leads. 
This NTC thermistor can be mounted on a smooth metal surfaceof an object for which the temperature needs to be measured by using M2.5 metric screw. In order to obtain an accurate measurement result, a cover made of thethermal insulating materialshould be used to cover the NTC thermistor area.

SMT Components Kits (III)

Continued from the last article.
We have SMT kits with components already sorted inside, i.e. resistor kits, capacitor kits and inductor kits. These kits have different quantities and component values presorted in the kits.
Resistor kits have 1206 1/4W 1% resistors, 0805 1/8W 1% resistors, 0603 1/10W 1% resistors, 0402 1/16W 1% resistors, 0603 5% resistors, and 0805 5% resistors inside. Moreover, there are 128 values/kit (use one enclosure), and 510 values/set (a set of resistor kits include 4 enclosures and 128 values/kit). 
Capacitor kitshave 1206 capacitors, 0805 capacitors, 0603 capacitors, 0402 capacitors, and values from 0.5pF to 22uF. There are totally around 100 values in one kit. For each value, there are 20pcs/value, 50pcs/value, 100pcs/value or 200pcs/value capacitor kits.
Inductor kits.
Inductor kitshave 1008inductors, 0805 inductors, 0603 inductors, and 0402 inductors. There are 35values, 43values, 60values, 74 values, 85 values, and 88values.

Since the kits are small, it’s easy to carry it when you go out. You can just put it into your bag, as easy as carrying a book.The kits enclosure has a letter paper size: 11”(L) × 8.5”(W) × 2.2”(H) (279mm(L) × 216mm(W) × 56mm(H)). In addition, the compartments form a matrix of 8 rows × 16 columns.
ATI offers a coverlet label with the component kits, or you can print it out by yourself.The coverlet label can be printed by the laser printer, or written by hand. We also provide two top labels and two front labels. The coverlet label can be used to paste on the lid of each compartment to indicate the inner content of the compartment. The top labels can be used when a same type of components are placed in the kits. For example, when it’s inductors, then the kit is inductor kit. Moreover, we have SMT kits with components already sorted inside.

Notes of high efficiency Peltier controller TEC5V4A-D

TEC5V4A-D is a kind of Peltier controller, which is used to monitor and regulate the object temperature. The maximum output current of Peltier controller TEC5V4A- Dis 4A and the maximum output voltage is 4.7V. This Peltier controller has high efficiency and high reliability. Peltier controller provides two packaging methods, DIP package and SMT package. The following is the physical photo of Peltier controller TEC5V4A-D.

There are many interface ports provided by the Peltier controller, and customers can use the ports to set the object required temperature and the maximum output voltage. In order to avoid the interference between the controller and other electronics, Peltier controller is packaged in a 6 sided metal enclosure. 
Before using Peltier controller, there are some things to be noted.During working process, the power supply may have overshoot, and if this happens, the voltage may exceed the maximum allowed input voltage, 6V, of thePeltier controller and damage the controller permanently. In order to avoid this from happening, before supplying the power,be sure that the Peltier controller is connected to the power supplysolid well; the power supply is ensured to havelarge enough output current; when using a bench top power supply, the current limit is set more than 1.5 times higher than the maximum current thatthe controller requires.

Working principle of Peltier controller

Peltier controller is an independent research and development product of ATI, which is designed for drivingthermoelectric coolers (TECs) to regulate the object temperature. Peltier controller has many good characteristics, such as high energy efficiency, high stability, high accuracy, compact size, etc. As shown in Figure 1, this Peltier controller packaged in a six sided metal enclosure has zero EMI to avoid the interference with other electronics. Peltier controller can realize such functions as thermistor T-R curve linearization, temperature measurement and monitoring, temperature control loop status indication, TEC voltage monitoring, power up delay, and shut down.

Peltiercontroller comes with a low noise reference voltage. By using the reference voltage, the object temperature can be set and the temperature error is independent of the reference. The internal temperature measurementnetwork also uses the voltage as reference, and the errors in setting and measuring the temperature cancel with each other. 
There are many kinds of Peltier controllers in our company, including those with or without an internal compensation network and without internal compensation network. The Peltiercontroller without internal compensation network needs an external compensation network. The compensation network can compensates high order thermal load and stabilizes the temperature controlloop.

SMT Components Kits (I)

For various electronic SMT components such as inductors, resistors and capacitors, a proper kit for collecting them is very practical and important. ATI researched and developed a SMT component kit about 20 years ago, which are still protected by USPTO for its patent. The designer is a professional electronic engineer, who found it difficult and inconvenient to arrange and collect different SMT components on the workbench before the kit was invented. These components are essential for basic electronic design, but it takes a lot time to find the right one among a pile of components when they are all put on the workbench. Thus, the SMT component kits were designed and produced. 
The SMT components kit is a paper-sized box, inside which there are 128 individually lidded compartments. SMT components can be put into these lidded compartments. There is a big top cover with a piece of foam inside, which can ensure the components inside the compartments will not leak when the cover is closed. It’s convenient to refill the compartments when the components are used up.

NTC Thermistor ATH10KL2B

ATH10KL2B is a NTC thermistor with an extra small ring lug that is used for easy fixing. There is a glass encapsulated NTC thermistor ATH10K1R25 with high stability and accuracy inside the ring lug. Glass encapsulated thermistor presents better long term stability and reliability, and has a wider temperature range.
ATI provides another two types of this NTC thermistor for different applications, ATH10KL2BT70 and ATH10KL2BT70S. The former has two leads covered with plastic tubing but non-sealed, and the latter has plastic tubing too, sealed by epoxy between the plastic tubing and its thermistor head. The length of the thermistor leads is 70 ± 1mm. The length of the ring lug is 11.2 ± 0.1mm, and the width of the ring lug is 5.5 ± 0.1mm. This NTC thermistor has a wide temperature range, from −40°C to 270°C.

There are also NTC thermistors without small ring lug, which features higher accuracy, such as ATH10K1R25 andATH10KR8B, etc. These thermistors have different nominal values and B values, which can meet your different requirements on various thermal control applications.

NTC Thermistor ATH10K1R0

ATH10K1R0 is a NTC thermistor with thermistor head encapsulated with glass instead of epoxy. Glass encapsulated NTC thermistor presents better long term stability, more compact size, shorter response time, and a wider temperature range. 
This NTC thermistor has two leads covered with high temperature plastic tubing and gets sealed between thermistor head and two leads, which can prevent the thermistor from being corroded in the liquid. The covered leads can prevent them from shorting from each other. Therefore, this NTC thermistor is liquid resistant. Moreover, this NTC thermistor can work under up to 250°C temperature, more than that of other similar products. The nominal resistance at 25°C is 10K ± 1%. Thermistor diameter is very small, 1.0 ± 0.1mm, and the thermistor length is 1.4 ± 0.4mm. The length of the two leads is 66.5 ± 3mm. In still air, the time constant of this thermistor is 4s at 5~25°C. All the NTC thermistors are lead free and RoHS compliant.

Application of a high efficiency Peliter controller

TEC5V4A-D is a high efficiency Peltier controller, which is designed and produced by ATI. TEC5V4A-DPeltier controller comes with many interface ports that can be used to set the required object temperature and the maximum output voltage. This Peltier controller has high efficiency, high accuracy, high reliability, etc. Because of the above advantages, TEC5V4A-DPeltier controller has been widely utilized to drive TEC (thermoelectric cooler). NTC Thermistor ATH100K1R25

The ATH100K1R25 is a high precision and glass encapsulated NTC thermistor with high stability. This NTC thermistor can be applied for temperature sensing for laser diodes, optical components, temperature control system, industrial process control, etc. All these applications require high temperature sensitivity, long term stability, and/or high sensing temperature.
This NTC thermistor is the same as ATH10K1R25 on its size and dimension. The thermistor head is φ1.25mm×2.0mm. The length of its two leads is 70 ± 1mm with a diameter of 0.2mm. The nominal resistance at 25°C is 100K ± 1%. 
This thermistor has a wide temperature range, from −40°C to 270°C. They can work under up to 140°C temperature. In order to meet different requirements, there are two more versions besides bare leads thermistor: ATH100K1R25T70 and ATH100K1R25T70S. The former has two leads covered with high temperature plastic tubing and the latter does the same, but has its thermistor head and the plastic tubing sealed. The sealed version is liquid resistant, which can be used in liquid.

Application of TECA1-XV-XV-DPeltier controller

TECA1-XV-XV-D is a kind of Peltier controllers, which is an electronic module with an output current up to 2.5A. This Peltier controller has high efficiency (more than 90%), high stability, high reliability and compact size, so it can meet variousdemands of driving thermoelectric cooler (TEC). TECA1-XV-XV-DPeltier controller is 100% lead (pb)-free and RoSHcompliant. Figure 1 is the physical photo of TECA1-XV-XV-DPeltier controller.TECA1-XV-XV-D is packaged in six sided metal enclosure, which blocks EMIs to avoid interferences between the controller and other electronics.

NTC Thermistor ATH10K0.1%1R25

ATH10K0.1%1R25 is a glass encapsulated NTC thermistor, with compact size and high stability and reliability. This NTC thermistor has a higher accuracy than a similar thermistor ATH10K1R25. The accuracy is about 0.1%, and the accuracy of ATH10K1R25 is 1%. 
Comparing with epoxy encapsulated thermistors, this high accuracy glass encapsulated NTC thermistor has wider temperature range, especially on the high end, better long term stability, smaller size, and shorter response time. The length of thermistor leads is 70 ± 1mm, and the lead diameter is 0.23mm. The diameter of NTC thermistor head is 1.25 ± 0.03mm. The nominal resistance at 25°C is 10K ± 1%. Insulation resistance is 50MΩ. 
Similar to ATH10K1R25, this NTC thermistor also has two versions except the bare lead version. One is sealed version, with the leads covered with high temperature plastic tubing and sealed. The other is non-sealed, with the leads covered too.

NTC Thermistor ATH100KR8B

ATH100KR8B is a negative coefficient thermistor, which has been commonly used for many years. This NTC thermistor is similar to ATH10KR8B, but has a different nominal resistance at 25°C, 100K ± 1%. 
This NTC thermistor is glass encapsulated with high stability and reliability. The compact size is suitable for high precision temperature system, φ0.8mm×1.4mm. The length of the leads is 63± 3mm. There are three versions of this thermistor regarding its lead types. One is bare leads, and the other is leads covered with high temperature plastic tubing, but non-sealed; another one is leads covered with high temperature plastic tubing, but sealed. Sealed NTC thermistor is liquid resistance, so it can be used in non-corrosive liquid for temperature sensing. This NTC thermistor has a wide temperature range, −55°C to 250°C, and all versions of thermistors can work under up to 140°C temperature. ATFC105D Peltier controller

ATFC105D is a kind of Peltier controller, which is designed for driving and monitoring TEC/Fan assemblies. The high output power for TEC of ATFC105D Peltier controller is 12V20A and it has high efficiency, more than 98%. By using a TEC array and a fan array, ATFC105D Peltier controller is utilized to control the heat sink hot side temperature, heat sink cold side temperature, the chamber temperature, etc. What’s more, there is a protection circuit inside. If the temperature exceeds the safe value, it will cut off an AC power switch. From the picture, you’ll find the user interface is very easy to setup and use.

New NTC Thermistor ATH10KR8B

NTC thermistor ATH10KR8B is a replacement thermistor for ATH10KR8, which has stopped production. ATH10KR8B has wide applications, such as temperature sensing, measuring and controlling for laser diodes, optical components and other temperature control systems.
Like ATH10KR8, ATH10KR8B also has three versions, one sealed and two non-sealed. The sealed version is ATH10KR8BT65S, which means the thermistor leads are covered with plastic tubing and get sealed between the thermistor head and tubing. The sealed thermistor is liquid resistant. The non-sealed versions is ATH10KR8B and ATH10KR8BT65. The former has bare leads, while the latter comes with the leads covered with plastic tubing, but non-sealed. All these versions of NTC thermistor series are encapsulated with glass, which performs higher and longer stability and reliability, compared with epoxy encapsulated thermistor. These NTC thermistors can work well under up to 140°C temperature.
Nominal resistance at 25°C is 10K ± 1%. B value @ 25°C /85°C is 3478K± 1%. The lead length is a little shorter than ATH10KR8, 65± 3mm. The size is compact, φ0.8mm×1.4mm. The resistance accuracy is 1%. For more detailed data, please refer to the website.

Most convenient inductor kits

Inductor kits were developed by Analog Technologies (ATI) in 1997. Inductor kits are our US-patented products, as shown in Figure 1. Inductor kits are very popular among electronic designers because of having compact size, carrying easily and searching elementconveniently.

There are 128 individually lidded compartments (0.87” (L) * 0.59” (W) * 0.63’’ (D)) with inductor valuesprinted on the lid of each enclosure. As the lid of each small enclosure inside is very tight, it can ensure that internal chip inductors will not leak or loss.What’s more, they can be easily put on a workbench, stored on a shelf, or transported to another site, making them the best choice for building prototypes or reworking printed circuit boards.

12V20A digital Peltier/fan controller

ATFC107D is the part number of12V20A digital Peltier controller. ATFC107D Peltier controller is designed to drive and monitor the working status of a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) assembly and a fan assembly. This Peltier controller comes with a digital display for parameter setting and monitoring. It also has compact size and high efficiency (more than 98%). Through USB port, Peltier controller can be connected to PC. Figure 1 is the photo of an actual ATFC107D Peltier controller.

The working parameters of a TEC/fan assembly are shown on the display of ATFC107D Peltier controller and these parameters can be sent to PC by using the USB port. This Peltier controller provides a soft-start and soft-cut function to drive TEC, so the service life time of TEC will be longer. What’s more, it allows users to set the temperature parameters and monitor the temperature value.

Miniature NTC Thermistor ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3

NTC thermistor is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor that is used to measure, monitor or control temperature in temperature system.  ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3 is a thermistor assembly, which is encapsulated by glass and packaged in an extra compact ring lug. Glass encapsulated is for long term stability and reliability, while compact ring lug is for easy fixing on the target device.
The ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3 series thermistor can be applied for measuring the temperatures of laser diodes, optical components, etc.
This series NTC thermistor assembly series include three versions: ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3, ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3T70 and ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3T70S. The difference among them lies in the thermistor leads. ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3 comes with bare leads coated with copper; ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3T70 comes with leads covered by high temperature plastic tubing, non-sealed, while ATH1R38M0.1%200CL5R3T70S is the sealed version with leads covered. 
This NTC thermistor has high resistance accuracy, about 0.1%. The temperature error is ±0.2°C. The maximum temperature range is from 0°C to 340°C. Nominal resistance at 25°C is 1388.1K ± 0.1%. B value at 200°C /300°C is 5133K ± 0.1%.
